About Harewood Pet Hospital
Harewood Pet Hospital is a locally owned, family‑run veterinary clinic in Nanaimo’s Harewood/University District at 508 Eighth Street. We care for dogs and cats with full‑service medicine—wellness, dentistry, diagnostics (bloodwork, X‑ray, FAST), and surgery. We also offer same‑day help for urgent issues during open hours (Urgent Care). Expect friendly faces, continuity with the same doctor, transparent estimates, and convenient weekend availability.

“Every family deserves a vet who explains things clearly.”
I started Harewood Pet Hospital to serve the broader community my family calls home! I grew up in a farm community, and that upbringing shaped a practical, loving, animal‑first approach. I’m raising my family on the Island and wanted our clinic to serve the families and students we live alongside. In my view Harewood is where a family‑run for families hospital can make the biggest daily impact—with the same vet continuity, low‑stress visits, and practical, transparent care.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Do you see urgent cases?
During our open hours we provide comprehensive care for dogs and cats—from routine wellness to most medical, dental, and surgical issues. For urgent, same‑day issues during open hours, call us first so we can triage and prepare for your pet’s immediate needs.
Which pets do you see?

My pet is anxious at the vet. What do you do to keep visits low‑stress?
We practice fear‑wise, low‑stress handling: cozy rooms, treats, quiet pacing, and gentle restraint only when needed. You can help by bringing your pet hungry (for treats), using a secure carrier/harness, and waiting in your car if your pet relaxes better there—we’ll text you in. Ask us about pre‑visit calming options if your pet is very nervous.
I’m a new client—what should I bring to the first appointment?
Please bring any previous medical records, medications/supplements, and your pet’s current diet info. If possible arrive 5–10 minutes early to complete forms (or fill them out online in advance: https://harewoodvet.ca/new-client-registration/)
What’s your approach to vaccines and parasite prevention in Nanaimo?
We tailor care to your pet’s age, lifestyle, and local risks. Core vaccines are recommended for all dogs and cats, and many pets benefit from year‑round parasite protection (fleas, ticks, and intestinal worms) given Vancouver Island’s mild climate. We’ll review your pet’s routine (indoor/outdoor, parks like Colliery Dam, travel) and build a personalized prevention plan.
What if I can not reach your team and my pet is in need of immidiate care?
If you can’t reach us or due to circumstances our team recommend advanced/overnight care, please use the nearest 24/7 veterinary hospital: [24/7 Hospital Link/Name, I think I need some agreement to share this in a link].
What should I feed my new puppy/kitten?
Choose an AAFCO‑compliant growth diet appropriate for your pet’s adult size (eg. use large‑breed puppy for large breeds). Feed measured portions—3–4×/day for puppies, 3–5×/day for kittens. Transition over 7–10 days and keep treats under 10% of daily calories.
Can I give my pet human medicine?
No—don’t give human meds without veterinary advice. Common drugs like ibuprofen, naproxen, and acetaminophen can be toxic (especially to cats), and even “safe” meds have different doses for pets.
Lumps & bumps—should I worry?
Many lumps are benign (lipomas, cysts), but You can book an exam so we can measure, map, and sample (fine‑needle aspirate, FNA) if needed. Seek care sooner if a lump grows quickly, is painful, ulcerated, bleeding, or your pet seems unwell.
Why is my pet limping?
Causes range from sprains or torn nails to arthritis, cruciate tears, or other injuries. Until your exam, keep your pet on‑leash, well rest and avoid stairs, running, and fetch. Same‑day care is needed if your pet won’t bear weight, the limb is swollen or wounded, or pain is severe.
Can I give my pet human food or treats?
Some people foods are safe in small amounts, but many are dangerous (e.g., chocolate, grapes/raisins, xylitol). Choose pet‑safe treats and count them toward daily calories to prevent weight gain. Ask us for our Safe & Toxic Foods guide and portion tips.
